When you register with BMET and get your clearance, you’re officially in the system. This means if something goes wrong in your destination country — your employer doesn’t pay you, you face abuse, there’s an emergency — BMET has a record of you and can intervene through official channels.
What is BMET Clearance?
BMET clearance is the official government permission that allows you to board a flight from Bangladesh for overseas employment. Without this clearance, Dhaka or Chittagong airport immigration will not let you board.
It comes in two parts:
- BMET Smart Card — Your registration card as a BMET-registered worker
- Emigration Clearance — The actual permission to travel for work
Who Needs BMET Clearance?
Any Bangladeshi citizen travelling abroad for employment purposes needs BMET clearance. This includes workers going to:

Step-by-Step BMET Clearance Process
Step 1: Register with BMET Online
Go to the official BMET website: bmet.gov.bd
Create an account using your National ID Number (NID). Fill in your personal information accurately — name, address, educational background, work experience.
Step 2: Fill Out the Emigration Form
After registration, fill out the emigration form with your job details:
- Destination country
- Employer name and address in destination country
- Job type and salary
- Recruitment agency details (if applicable)
- Contract duration
Step 3: Pay the Wage Earners’ Welfare Fund Contribution
This is a mandatory payment into Bangladesh’s Wage Earners’ Welfare Fund. The amount varies by destination country but is typically between BDT 2,500 – 3,500. This fund provides support services and welfare benefits to Bangladeshi workers abroad.
Payment can be made at designated banks or through the BMET online portal.
Step 4: Pre-Departure Orientation (PDOT)
BMET organizes Pre-Departure Orientation Training (PDOT) for workers going abroad. This covers:
- Destination country laws and customs
- Worker rights and protections
- What to do in emergencies
- How to contact BMET from abroad
Attendance at PDOT is required for most destinations. Duration is typically 1–2 days.
Step 5: Collect Your BMET Smart Card
Your BMET Smart Card is your official identification as a registered overseas worker. It contains:
- Your personal information
- Destination country
- Employer details
- Emergency contact information
The Smart Card is issued after your registration, payment, and PDOT are complete. Keep it safe — you’ll need it at airport immigration when departing Bangladesh.
Step 6: Get Emigration Clearance at the Airport
On your day of travel, you present your BMET Smart Card, valid work visa, employment contract, and passport to the BMET counter at Dhaka (Hazrat Shahjalal) or Chittagong (Shah Amanat) airport. They verify your details and stamp your clearance.
Without this stamp, you do not board. This is the final gate.

BMET Clearance for Malaysia Specifically
For Malaysia-bound workers, there are a couple of specific things to note:
G2G workers (Government-to-Government program) have a slightly different BMET process with dedicated government counters.
Plantation sector workers going under TEP have their BMET registration often coordinated through their agency. Make sure your agency handles this properly and gives you your Smart Card — don’t let them “hold” it for you.
What BMET Protects You From
People sometimes see BMET as just another bureaucratic step. But it genuinely matters:
- If your employer doesn’t pay you, BMET can intervene diplomatically
- If you’re stranded abroad, BMET coordinates repatriation
- BMET death and disability benefits go to your family if something happens to you
